I want to pick your brains. So this wont' take long. LOL

Anyway, so the weather is beautiful and of course I can't wait to go for my first bike ride of the season which I am going to this Saturday. I have a new car. Now in my old car, I used a trunk rack. And it did leave scratches. How do you guys deal with this? I can't use a hitch because it's leased and that seems like a big project. Remember I don't know how to do stuff like that. How retarded is it to just put the bike in your back seat with a blanket under it? There really are no trunk racks that don't leave scratches am I right?

Back when I had a car, I used a trunk rack all the time... never had a scratch. What kind of rack are you using? It should have foam rollers that when positioned on the top of your trunk and rear bumper properly should never leave a scratch.

I just went and got it. It's an Allen, and it does have the foam rollers. Maybe I was doing it wrong then. You never had a scratch? Wow. Then I definitely must be doing something wrong. Okay, thanks.

I prefer Yakima, but even the Allens should not scratch. The only thing that should be touching your trunk and bumper are those rollers. Check each roller, you may have a tear in one that is causing metal on trunk/bumper. The only thing other thing I can think of is you have too small of a bike rack for the trunk of the vehicle and thus it is causing other parts of the rack to scrape the trunk.
 
Side note: it is worth spending more for a good bike rack if you plan to have it and use it for the next 5-10 years. When you amortize the cost per year, not much of a difference.
 
you know what, the bike store by me has precisely one trunk bike rack. The one I bought. I will look around for a bigger bike shop and check out the Yakima one, thank you.

There's this really cool website called amazon.com where you can buy various types of goods over the internet and they'll actually ship them directly to your house. And the prices are really good! You should check it out.

Thule or Yakima in my opinion. Depending on number of bikes you are carrying... if you are looking at Yakima, the 'Joe' series is pretty good for trunk racks... King Joe probably a good fit for what you want. If Thule... the Raceway is likely a good fit.

Not that Allen's are bad, my guess is you just don't have the right sized rack for your trunk.

Yes, you can find them cheaper on line.

That said, you should research them... go directly to Yakima and Thule websites. Look at the reviews. Look at the specs. Once you find the right one, then you can go to an amazon and get it. With Amazon, just make sure the rack is new. No used. Used you run the risk of getting one with missing parts or damaged.

Craigslist is actually a better fit, because you can inspect it prior to purchase. That said, it is probably easier in CO than in NYC to find a bike rack there.

Okay that's why I think I should go to the shop, but I will write this all down and bring it with me. Thank you I appreciate your taking time out of your busy schedule of laughing your ass off and calling people morons. ;)

Don't worry, I was still laughing while helping you. If a bike shop only has one kind of bike rack, it is either very tiny or not very good (or both).

The King Joe and Raceway will fit just about any trunk. If you have a rear spoiler, double check reviews and specs to see what others have written.

Hi, go to a New Car dealer and tell them what you want to do, and ask what they suggest, there are probably bike rider sales people who had a similar problem. I assume you Googled the Reviews for you Bike Rack or you looked up the Rack Manufacturer web site and ask/call them questions. Also, I use YouTube for everything Mechanical, even if I already think I know about something, there are always little "Tricks" on how to do just about anything, especially how to properly attach things on cars, there has to be people showing it on videos. I know that this might sound too personal, and I sure don't want that again, but if you post the type of rack and type/year of car, I will look it up for you and just post the link/links, that's up to you, just a thought?

It's small, and the best bike they carry are Schwinn so that tells you the story right? Not for serious cyclists. But there is a place in Massapequa that i think might be. That said I will check all of this stuff you gave me out online.

No that is okay, but thanks, actually the youtube idea is a very good one, I will do that. I am a total spaz when it comes to putting things together. Really not my forte.
