Being White in Philly

Darla, you are the one that is clueless on race. You think that white men should be excluded from the conversation because 'what could they know? They are a bunch of oppressors!!!'

You may not like everything that guy said, but he tried to convey the need for dialogue.

But you don't care about that do you? You just want to attack him because he was a white guy trying to discuss race.

1) No, I do not think that.

2) I don't like anything the guy said, the manner in which he said it, or the entire tone of the piece.

3) No, I want to call an asshole an asshole, which is what I did. Strange you took it personally.

What makes him an asshole Darla? Let me guess... because he was a white male and dared to try to discuss the issue, but failed to write as eloquently as you would have?

Or should I have just stopped at 'white male'?

The fact that you read the entire article (assuming you did), and have to ask that, really shows that you are just not a person good at seeing things from any viewpoint other than the white male one.

Liberals and idiots usually respond to the truth just like you did.....you just can't accept the truth when it can be seen as racial, even remotely...

and the black racist that was so offended....predictable.....a totally innocent inquiry by a fellow student and its twisted into a racial attack.....
If any statement can be spun and used to accuse a white of being racist, the liberal morons will find a way to do it....context doesn't matter in the least....
This article is a perfect example.....
=============================

I took my daughter to Temple for a look see and while she toured the college my wife and I walked to local McDonalds.....that setteled the case for me...no way
in this world would I let my kid go to that school even if it was offered free.....gangs roamed the streets with their gang jackets, in packs, forcing people off
the sidewalks, kicking parked autos, and the word motherfuc--r echoed through the air constantly....
Thats just the truth, like it or not....over 20 years now and I'd guess its only gotten worse.....

"If its the truth, it ain't racist"- Poet

I wouldn't call that girl racist. I understand if you are one of the few black people at a school that is known for being mostly white it's not surprising she is more sensitive about perceived racial slights. But she obviously way overreacted by taking personally and perceiving a racial angle to a message sent to everyone in the class.

Did she? Did you hear her side of it? How do you know that woman really did send it to "everyone in class"? How do you know that that woman doesn't have a history of making racially loaded comments to and around the black woman? You don't. Only one side was presented -the white side. Problem number one with the article.

Okay I read the whole thing Cawacko. I am really surprised at you for posting this without commenting on the content of the article. That guy is the biggest asshole ever, I cannot even believe it. I don't get it, i am white. Is it because I'm a woman? If that fucking guy wrote a similar article about how to get along with the bitches and all the things he couldn't say, and how he only wished he could be free to advise us on getting our act together (but you know the PC police won't let him! being the subtext), I would borrow Grind's imaginary gun and shoot him in the face! Shoot him right in his smug face! That's right! It would be imaginary, but it will still feel good!

Some of you effing white guys are so clueless.

His next article will be about women using profanity during public discourse and it will be entitled: Do they all have tattoos?

There is a way to do it though, and I believe the way the article goes about it is the wrong way.

That is fair enough, you may not like the approach he took, but he is trying. For Darla and others to call him an asshole and pretend he is 'lecturing' people is not constructive and certainly will do nothing to advance discussion.

But this is how I see it: We need to bridge the conversational divide so that there are no longer two private dialogues in Philadelphia—white people talking to other whites, and black people to blacks—but a city in which it is okay to speak openly about race. That feels like a lot to ask, a leap of faith for everyone. It also seems like the only place to go, the necessary next step.

I think that sums up his intent fairly well.

What a crappy article. I don't know if it is "yelling fire" but it is rather racist and a lousy piece of journalism.

The author starts with the apparent assumption that crime in and around Temple is only a problem or concern for white people. If his white son was not there it would not matter. He continues this throughout the article assuming all crime is the result of african americans and only harms white people or only matters when it does.

He uses several poorly sourced and/or investigated anecdotal incidents. In every one of them the perspective is only white and in negative encounters with blacks, the incident is blamed on the black person. If the depiction of blacks in the article is not of some shadowy criminal then they are too senstive of racism and there is no sign of empathy for the black person involved from the author. When his sources express empathy he challenges them and these are seemingly the only sources he did challenge.

Then he talks about his own racism and how he feels guilt. He tries, extra special hard, to be friendly towards blacks. Does he really think that's what they want? For him to act like a phoney? I have seen other white idiots play the I'm tough card. Why not just be yourself? Well, unless of course you are an asshole like the author.

OMG Why do you hate white men! OMG why are you telling white men and superfreak that they can't talk?!

I think that other white guys here can see that this guy is an asshole, really just shows what an asshole SF is. I am not trying to be cruel to you SF, or start a fight, but being an asshole appears to come naturally to you and you just can't recognize asshole behavior in others, because to you that's just normal behavior. So you walk around with a "WTF is the problem?" look on your face all day.

Cawacko you I am surprised over. That you can't see the author is an asshole, or at least wrote an article from the viewpoint of an asshole, surprises me because you're generally not an asshole.

But I guess I have a special relationship with you like i do with Grind, so even when you guys are assholes, it really doesn't piss me off at all. ALthough Grind I get actually hate mail about. How can you talk to that ASSHOLE!? So far no hate mail on you.

Anyway, just my views, and no I do not hate anyone involved in this, sorry. But that is a stupid accusation.

Yeah, strange... How could anyone have picked up on animosity on your part towards white guys...

Some of you effing white guys are so clueless.

For the record Darla I believe we can have a discussion on this disagree and even have the discussion get heated yet still be cool at the end of it. I also don't mind you calling me out saying I think you missed something here or aren't looking at this right or this doesn't seem like you.

Having a discussion on this or any other (controversial) topic might bring thoughts or ideas to me that I didn't see the first time around.

Wrong... the fact that you knew it was a white guy writing the article is why you immediately jumped to the conclusion he must be 'lecturing black people'. Your bias against white guys tainted your view of the article from the start. You were going to see it as lecturing regardless.

You then put your inability to see through anothers eyes onto me with your stupid 'you can only see things through the viewpoint of a white guy'. You automatically assume the worst with this guy because he was white. Because you only see things through your feminist tainted glasses.

Funny, he is a white people only interviewing white people...

Which is nothing more than another example of your hatred towards white guys who dare discuss anything. How about you show us what it is that makes you think he is an asshole. Point to an example. Then we can discuss your lunacy some more.
