FGM, like make circumcision practiced in the USA is a culture thing that because we in the USA don't practice it, perceive it as mutilation and abhor the practice.

"Many women believe that FGM is necessary to ensure acceptance by their community; they are unaware that FGM is not practised in most of the world.".

This is what I often find, outside cultures looking in have problems with others cultural practices, our own of women mutilating their bodies with plastic surgery and breast implants for acceptance.

I do not agree with fmg, but it is cultural and women in these cultures practice this willingly. It is hard or us to perceive, but for them it is part of their lives.

Yes, I know all about that as I've posted something similar before now. Female circumcision is a practice mainly confined to sub-Saharan Africa and parts of the Middle East.

It is a disgusting practice that should be condemned especially when practised in the West.

"we abhor the practice"....?.....well, thats a start...but we still 'tolerate' it because they think its necessary....like we would tolerate cannibalism or maybe the selling of slaves, if 'they' think its necessary and it part of their culture.....I'm beginning to understand....

And 'they' are unaware it is not practiced in the rest of the world....really?....they must live in caves and haven't learned about cities and electricity and such

Are you suggesting that girls are WILLINGLY requesting that their clitoris be removed, without anesthesia, and through the application of a broken piece of glass?
I guess those holding the WILLING victim down; are so she doesn't fall off the table, while enjoying the procedure.
 
FGM is a deplorable practice, that has to end. But again, it's something its proponents use the religion to justify - it's done for reasons that have nothing at all to do w/ the religion.

Horrific practices throughout history have been justified citing religion. If that kind of thing impugns the religion, there are very few religions that would escape from that unscathed.

I'd never condone FGM, ever. But these blindered boneheads really don't have a clue about cultural practices outside the US, and that the way to change is through education. And, they don't want to learn either, witness popeye's freak out over al-Jazeera buying Current TV. When an attempt was made to educate people, for example that program "All-American Muslim", these nuts condemned it without even watching. I swear they have a genetic need to hate people who are different.

Yes, I have Muslim friends, I do tolerate their religion, their lifestyles are not much differentNahan mine when it comes to everyday living and surprisingly, they have never tried to stone me for my disbelief. I have in fact, never seen her be anything but kind and loving!

If you calculated the % of the Islam population who partake in "stoning," it would be a decimal that would extend out for quite a few zero's.

I wonder how much time and money these bloviators are contributing to end such practices in those patriarchal societies. Because, bravo, stargazer and the rest, this isn't an Islamic practice, it's a fear-based belief of middle eastern and african conservative men who must stem female sexuality at all costs.

I have only recently become friends with a Muslim, he is from Pakistan. He's a genius. Anyway, he recently surprised me by mentioning that he doesn't drink just before we were to attend a business social function. And he stated matter-of-factly that it was because he was religious. It's interesting being exposed to this, because he is hilarious, not at all uptight, and I curse like a truck driver around him and it doesn't seem to bother him at all. I have no idea what his views on women are, but I have yet to pick up a speck of sexism from him, so...I just leave it at that. I love being exposed to new, diverse people. Of course I've known Muslims in the past, but this is the first real relationship I can say I've had with a Muslim. (I stress this is a friendly business relationship of some depth, but business only). I would be the first one to tell him to get f'd if he started any sexist religious bullshit. I don't put up with it from anyone. But it's not come up at all. I deal with more sexist bullshit from Italian guys I know, dead serious.

It has to be that because hating people for something they might do is ridiculous. Education is what brought the West out of the dark ages, we need to support programs that promote education in these backwards countries!
