I agree with Harry Reid

Was going to post this in the "Made in the USA" thread that got dragged out yesterday but decided to make a new one.

"I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.,...

I suspect that a lot of equipment and other clothing the athletes use and wear isn't made here either....and I hate the berets. Oh well.
I hate the uniforms. They're athletes not soldiers.

Your link is one of a tiny handful of American manufacturers. Most are long gone.

And when searching, you can't always be sure. 'Free Trade Zones' are set up specifically to exploit cheap foreign labor while claiming to be 'made in the U.S.A.'.

Yep, they're a tiny group but they're a tiny group in my neck of the woods. Who knows, if more would do stuff like this...you know, get the metal for car manufacturing from the US....make the parts here and actually make the cars here competitively priced and of equal or better performance...whatever, who knows what that might do for a struggling economy. And I don't blame this on either party necessarily. Bill Clinton signed NAFTA after the republicans passed it, I think. I also think it had bi-partisan support. Outsourcing has been great for some businesses but has been terrible for an American work force.

Now, since I brought up car manufacturing, I'm sure we'll hear some union/anti-union talk, but so be it. I don't think I completely agree with either side. But no matter which political party a person is affiliated with, no matter if they are union or non-union, I would think that more American jobs would be a good thing.

I saw this story yesterday, too. And yes, I agree that it's ridiculous that the U.S.A.'s uniforms aren't made in the U.S.A., but given the fact that manufacturing is virtually gone in this country, it's not surprising. Look at the labels of everything you wear and you'll see that your wardrobe came from all over the world. What isn't surprising is that the 'outrage' occurs not because the uniforms were made in Indonesia, or Bangladesh, or Guatemala - but China.

I'll admit I had to chuckle seeing Reid and Pelosi all *shocked*, having a hissy over something that the rest of us have been complaining about for years now.

Textiles aren't manufacturing. And I guess all those help wanted signs I pass every day are imaginary.

I wholeheartedly agree w/ you on that. But Reid's example is pure symbolism, and cawacko is right - it's just shameless political grandstanding.

Do something to make America more attractive for manufacturers. Give tax credits for keeping things domestic. Anything at all.

How about having workers who can actually work in manufacturing?

Lawmakers were livid to discover that the United States’ Olympic team uniforms were made in China. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) even suggested “they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again.”

The company who designed the uniforms, Ralph Lauren, has received less scrutiny. Few outlets have noted that Ralph Lauren himself is a prominent contributor to President Obama and the Democratic Party. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Lauren has given $7,300 to Obama since 2008, and more than $35,000 to the Democratic National Committee.

Obama’s own ties to outsourcing have come under scrutiny of late. His much-vaunted green energy loan program awarded billions of taxpayer dollars to foreign-owned companies and firms that manufacture their products overseas.

It is unclear whether the DNC will be returning Lauren’s donation. DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse did not immediately return a request for comment.

.

Heck our military suppliers buy stuff from China.
This should NOT be allowed.

We cannot even protect ourselves with stuff we make now.
