14 September 2000, a Komatsu dozer pulled an abandoned tank from its archival tomb under the bottom of a lake near Johvi, Estonia. The Soviet-built T34 tank had been resting at the bottom of the lake for 56 years. It was found that oil was still in the tank, and the Estonian war history club members successfully started the engine.

Diesel submarines are extremely dangerous to ride around in. The US abandoned them long ago because of the huge danger to those within...

That was one of the hallmarks of Soviet engineering in general. They were very good at building rugged, reliable machines. That and training superb mathematicians.

Sometimes, making do with less can spur real creativity.
