They've probably spent 3 years coding the graphics engine, and just through in a story somewhere. I've seen tons of games go down this kind of path before.

It is also going to require, at least a 1200 dollar machine to play.

You're going to need a dual-core processor. The kind doesn't really matter, as modern games aren't CPU dependent anyway.

The graphics card is going to have to be an 8800 GS or more. The cheapest 8800 is 280 dollars.

You're going to need 2 GB of RAM... you'd need it with vista anyway.

Still, I bet it's going to suck.

Well you have to pay to play.
My new HP laptop has 2 gig, duo core 17" widescreen, and some kind of kick ass graphics card I forget the variety though. $550 after repates.

And you'll be replacing it in 1-2 years, or living with a piece of shit. I've done that long enough. Spend double that and get something that wil last.

I have had not problems with HP equip Have been using them for about 15 years. Had a hard drive fail in one back in the 90's. Only issue I ever had.
was a darned Seagate drive. Go Western Digital! :cheer:

btw the regular retail on the laptop was around $1,300...

Maybe so butt it seems to be the top of the Chinese made crap heap in hard drives. In our Chinese made PC's ;)
I have never had a WD drive go bad on me, have lost a few Seagates.

I stopped buying them, I had to replace about 20% of them in the computers I installed over a 2 year period on "warranty" work.

I totally disagree with your assessment of "top of the line".

Of course, I wouldn't buy Seagate either.... Maxtor has always given me the best results... Yeah, I know. Maxtor.

I think I had a huge supply of bad WD drives though. Most of those I replaced came from one install, it just put me off the danged things. I don't care if it is made in China, I just care whether or not it works.

Computer prices are going way down. It's beating inflation by a large margin. It used to be that you could buy a $2000 computer and it'd be useless after a year. Now, that's a $500 computer. I'm starting to think that the conventional wisdom that you're always going to have to spend a lot of money if you want a good computer is breaking down.

Hard drives especially have really dropped in price. Now, I know what you're thinking. You got the 20 MB hard drive in 1990, thought it would never be filled up, and in a month you had to constantly worry about space on it. Just the 120 gig hard drive I have now, sometimes I have to go and clean it out, but it generally holds anything I want it to. And you can buy 300 gig hard drives for $100. And for $200 you can by a TB that you're ACTUALLY never going to fill up.

I have one really cheap laptop. This is my porn/web browsing machine. My desktop is what I game on. Laptop was $500, desktop (after the upgrades) $1000.

Crysis vs. real life:

Crysis is a more accurate depiction, to me. God, I remember we used to think "Gosh, one day, we're going to have toy story like graphics". Now it's like, fuck, toy story was ugly.

I'm not going to upgrade my video any further, I think. Actually, I can't without upgrading to a newer MoBo -- which would mean replacing all of my RAM and a couple of cards too. Next time I really want a game my system can't handle I'm just going to break down and buy a dedicated game console system like a PS3 or something. It's cheaper in the long run.

Radeon 9700? Isn't that like five years old? :)

Does your MoBo use AGP, still, I guess? ATI was still releasing last generation cards that used AGP. Crysis will not look that good on them though.

The computer games industry is fading. Most of the best computer games are classics, and you really don't need an expensive computer to play them. I just don't see much of a reason not to simply use the console for newer games and the computer for all of the classics. The only other real highlight of the computer is strategy gaming, which simply can't be done without a mouse.

I really think that the computer is, gradually, just turning into an XBox clone system. Game developers just dump ports from the 360 onto the computer because the platforms are so simialar. I also think Microsoft is going to try to merge the two platforms together in order to save their Windows gaming from a complete meltdown. Maybe they'll just release a standardized computer, that can play both PC and XBox games?

Right now, though, Civilization IV -- for example -- is pushing my system to its limits: it crashes a bit too often for comfort.

My personal computer of choice is what I fondly call Frankenstein's Macintosh: I've cobbled it together over the years with bits and pieces bought on eBay and from computer salvage companies. It's a lot of fun its own right. The downside is that I'm still on 4x AGP and a 100MHz system bus. Not much more I can do with this old board, alas.

Yeah, I've also got a couple of PeeCees but I never use 'em by choice. I have to work on the Windows platform and prefer not to spend my leisure time there.

No, there are OSX versions of a lot of games out there. They're generally a few months behind the PC versions but I'm not into having the latest and greatest anyway.

Now my nephew has an Intel based Mac that he has set up for dual booting. He also uses it in a way diametrically opposed to my habits: he works in OSX and plays in Windows. ;)

I'm actually on AGP 4x and 100 MHZ system bus myself. I was actually going to pimp it out with this motherboard as much as possible, but then I learned that the motherboard had a hardwired 1GB RAM limit, and so I was like, fuck it, I can't do anything with that.

So I'm buying a new MoBo. But I'm still keeping the 20GB hard drive. :) Going to supplement it with another 160 GB internal or external one. Oh wait, yeah, all those new drives use fancy Schmancy SATA...

But look at this:

Intel Core quad
New MoBo
Geforce 8800 GT
24" widescreen CRT - the best CRT ever made, only sticking with it because 24" LCD's of any simialar price look A LOT worse. This CRT is actually used by CAD professionals and cost 3000 whenever it came out. But I'm a gamer, I don't mind the bulk if it looks absolutely amazing. Maximum resolution - 2304 x 1440 @ 80Hz.

All of that is going to cost about 700 dollars. I'm probably going to need a new power supply too though :(.

You're probably right. But I refuse to answer anything about gaming from now on besides... PC is the pwnzer OMGZ?1

Yeah, any day now I'll pick up that 360. Windows Gaming Live EXISTS, but there are very few games that will let you hook up with XBox Live gamers too, so, well, it's like the biggest desert in the world until Microsoft can force more gaming companies to accept the concept and allow XBox and PC gamers to play together.

Call Of Duty? Errr... isn't that strategy? It's basically impossible to make a strategy game for a console with dumbing it down enormosly.
