Auto-merge Feature... [Archive] - Just Plain Politics!

Many people I have come across over the years would abuse this ability as a way to increase their post count. This eliminates that. I don't see why anyone would complain about multiple posts becoming one. The board/threads will look much smoother without any one member making many posts in a row.

I don't like the merge, because often topics that are slightly different are merged because a moderator cant see that the threads are in fact different.

I think you should provide more info on the specific parameters, cause I don't really know how it functions atm

- what's the min number of posts it will merge? Will it merge a double post, or does it need to reach a certain threshold?

- What is the timespan for when it will merge posts?

I set a two minute limit, for now. It automatically merges posts in the thread made by the same person if somebody else hasn't posted between them.

The problem comes, when the thread diverges into different areas and the resulting answers are about different subjects; because when they're merged, it could appear that the answers are for a single subject matter.

I think it should be tweaked to engage after 3 posts or more in a row. I can also see where it would be a pain, if someone only wants to quote one of the merged comments. They'll have to delete everything in the reply box, before they can address the specific point they wanted to address.

We don't pride ourselves on "not changing anything"... that's inane. We pride ourselves on allowing people to say what they want with the least amount of restriction. This isn't a restriction on anything somebody says, it would simply merge a few posts. However, it seems more annoying than good, IMO.
