STOP THE PRESSES!

I've decided not to go with my voting method. Instead, I'm going to let a computer far off in Switzerland do it for me, by a fancy ranked method.

http://www.demochoice.org/dcballot.php?poll=Bestsong

You don't have to rank all of them. Honestly, I'd be surprised if your 31st rank made a difference on the outcome. About 10 or 20 should be enough.

The 8 winners which will be declared will move on to the head-to-head rounds.

OK, so, urg, do it.

You didn't put mine in.

Back in Black is more recognizable than half the songs you have.

And really...."Misty Mountain Hop" as the best Zep song ever? Puh-leeze... ;)

Cypress

Back in Black: 20 million albums sold worldwide.

Cover song is one of most recognizable rock songs ever: used in car commercials, on the Daily Show, and covered by countless bands like Foo Fighers among others.

I HATE ACDC.

I could only put thirty-two songs in, and whenever I saw back in black I was just revolted, so I decided to get rid of that one. Certainly nobody with class could vote for it.

OK...that seems simple enough.

(Pssst...does anybody know what he's talking about?)

Why, it's simple.

You take the first winner, then you reduce the weight of the votes of the people who selected that winner according to how much it would take to win a seat... if you do this throughout every round, you get proportionality. It's the best system ever, just completely incomprehensible.

But I got rid of all of it because I didn't want to hand count it. Now we're doing STV. I hate STV, it's a much lousier system than what I wanted, but they have a server up that'll do those kinds of polls for you. I prefer the ability to rate and examine every option, but I don't have enough to to hand count all of this.

Oh, okay. I was under the impression you went to the bother of soliciting other's opinions, and weren't creating a list of your own personal favorites.

What is this "rond"? Is it some sort of musical terminology that us "unwashed" have never heard of?

Yeah, metallica has got real class. How many metallica songs did you include?

FUCK THE POLICE
07-30-2006, 05:15 PM
Actually, I was joking.

But I honestly don't remember seeing ACDC in the list. I can edit the votes now, if you'd like it in.

And I hate Metallica.

To be honest with you, I DID actually exclude some Metallica songs.

Hell, who actually believes the 20 Metallica songs you guys posted are going to win? Really.

i don't care watermark. I'm just jerking your chain.

You've got some fairly obscure stuff on that list. I simply tried to think of a rock song that has stood the test of time, and is recognized virutally worldwide - as a test of "greatness".

Only 2 people have even voted in it, and from the looks of things, it was me a Charver.

I didn't realize that "moving" was a criteria for best songs ever.

It makes me wonder what this song is doing on your list:

Metallica- Master Of Puppets

It was utter shit, nothing barely comparable to the beauty of "Hallujah". All they did in "would" was repeat the same few pointless words over and over again in a droning voice while playing power chords. Any moron can accomplish this.

FUCK THE POLICE
07-30-2006, 10:57 PM
If there were three things that I could strike from the face of music in one fell swoop, it would be Chromatiscism, the power chord, and the entire concept of a "hook".

New Kds on the Block (gag, heave, retch), but no Hendrix? WTF? How about his cover of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower"? Dylan was blown away the first time he heard it.

Claptom's MIA too? Damn No "Crossroads" or "Layla"? For shame.

Great call. All Aong the Watchtower, pre Hendrix. Both were good, but I prefer the original.

A few other Dylans: Shelter From the Storm (my favorite Dylan song), Tangled up in blue, Rainy Day Women, Blowin in the wind. Yeah, yeah, the last two were trendy at some point but the first two are timeless.

You know Grind, I can pretty much tell from the results that we got that you bullet voted for Paranoid Android. Paranoid Android has 25% of the votes - something that indicates someone wasted their votes on it. This is why you should try to rank things a bit, so that your votes aren't completed wasted.

BRUTALITOPS
07-31-2006, 05:28 AM
i didn't feel like going through all that so i just voted me song number 1 :)

FUCK THE POLICE
07-31-2006, 01:59 PM
And about 1/2th of your vote was wasted.

Voting for 1 isn't going to improve that songs chances of winning. You should've AT LEAST voted ranked 5. You're vote is simply wasted, and paranoid android isn't probably going to be in the next rounds.

FUCK THE POLICE
07-31-2006, 02:42 PM
At the rate you guys are going, there's just going to be 8 votes, and those 8 people are simply going to send their favorites over to the next round.

OH yeah...

If you want to see the results, click final round.

If you want to see the process it allows you, but I doubt any of you simpletons would understand.

What the ranks basically do is redistribute votes from candidates that have to little support to win and candidates that already have enough - it assures that everyones ballot will count somewhat towards a winner. The actual process is a bit more complicated. But if you want to know what the actual rankings mean exactly, read the explanation it provides.

Just got here yesterday, so my only options as I saw them were silence in the face of a great injustice or a snide comment. Obviously, I had no choice byut the snide comment.

Boy, you can rationalize just about any act with a well-crafted false dilemma, can't you? No wonder the Shrubites love their logical fallacies so much. Beats having to think.

OK, I'm pretty sure someone rigged this poll. No way Tool got three votes for the BEST SONG EVER. I'd like you to realize, that this is not a simple vote of songs that you happened to like for 2 weeks back in 2003, but the best song ever. If Parabola is hte best song ever to you, you're either a teenager who's never heard anything else or stupid.
