Kamala Harris increases her visibility in front of possible presidential bid

America will be seeing a lot more from California Sen. Kamala Harris in the coming months, as she revs up for a possible 2020 presidential run.

It’s unlikely she’ll decide on a run until after the November midterm elections, but team Harris is making the moves, just in case.

And while Harris isn’t up there with former Vice President Joe Biden or Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, being an unknown might actually work in her favor.

A July 17 Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 73 percent of likely Democratic voters believe the party should look for a fresh face to run for president in 2020.

Any serious run, however, means that Harris will need to elevate her national profile. Harris, who early on seized on the power of social media, already is spending more on Facebook ads than any other senator.

A study by researchers at New York University found that Harris spent more than $134,000 on Facebook ads from May to early July. Those ads were viewed more than 12 million times, with most of the views coming from outside of California.

Harris has a new opportunity to make a big public splash at the upcoming Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nomine Brett Kavanaugh. Viewers are likely to see a repeat performance of the hard grilling Harris gave Attorney General Jeff Sessions when he appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee last year as part of the Russian meddling investigation.

Viewers are likely to see a repeat performance of the hard grilling Harris gave Attorney General Jeff Sessions when he appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee last year as part of the Russian meddling investigation.

Then there’s the midterm election. Harris is using her extensive small donor list to raise $5 million for progressive organizations such as MoveOn.org and fellow Senate Democrats such as Alabama’s Doug Jones and Wisconsin’s Tammy Baldwin.

Harris will also hit the campaign trail for her Senate colleagues, taking her into important primary states.

Being a sitting senator from California — often called the ATM of the Democratic Party — also works in her favor, either as a candidate or as a power player if she decides not to run.

“Look at where Democrats get their money — it’s San Francisco, Oakland and Los Angeles — and she has ties to the money in all three of those cities,” said one Harris confidant.

If Harris does go for the gold, the January publication of her new political memoir, “The Truths We Hold: An American Journey,” could double up for a campaign as well.

It’s doubtful that Harris’ policy-driven tome on such issues as same-sex marriage and the financial crisis will match the pop phenom success of former President Barack Obama’s “Dreams of My Father.” It will, nonetheless, afford Harris the opportunity for a national book tour with appearances on network TV shows that have a broader reach than the cable news outlets where the senator is now most often seen.

People keep saying it's going to be Bernie or Biden, or even Hillary again.

The Dems have some pretty solid up & comers. She'd be a strong candidate, imo (just based on what I've seen of her).

Kamala Harris doesn't stand a chance. DNC trying too check too many boxes at once with that one. She won't even make it to the nomination. Maybe if she sits in the VP slot and gives people awhile to soak her in as not the person with the BLM-sounding name.

Californians have a hard time connecting with the Rust Belt Americans. It will be interesting if she can 'sell herself' to mid-America.

What the fuck do you mean with "BLM-sounding name"?

I mean she has a BLM sounding name. She has other issues that will torpedo her run, but that is the one that will turn off casual-attention voters.

She is actually ubber conservative on crime. She talks a good game but she has an absolutely horrible record of supporting the policies that have weighed heavy on poor and minority communities.

Just another Democratic corporatist hack who serves the Wall Street/donor/"job creator" class to the detriment of society as whole. That's all the Democratic Party has to offer. They really need to fundamentally rethink the entire party, you jackasses lost to Donnie Trump for fucksake, you are utterly and completely out of power to do anything for anyone other than the aristocracy. We the people are on to you as a party.

Kamala Harris was a politically unknown assistant DA when she started dating and sleeping with Willie Brown, then the most powerful Democrat in California, a married man 30 years older than her. She parlayed that connection into support by the powerful Brown political machine to challenge and beat the incumbent Democratic San Francisco DA, Terry Hallinan. Sleeping your way to the top is no high-integrity career beginning anymore so than pussy grabbing and paying off skanks. Shakespeare warned us of the dangers of unchecked ambition and I think we should take the warning.

As DA, she presided over a wholesale violation of the constitutional rights of defendants-- violations so fundamental that nearly 1,000 felony prosecutions had to be dismissed by several very angry judges. There were a variety of incidents, many of them having to do with the police crime lab failing to provide accurate "chain of custody" for evidence, as well as evidence of police techs stealing evidence.

"Chain of custody" is a technical term, but an important term that insures, for example, that if someone is prosecuted for possession of drugs, when the police or police experts testify about those drugs, they actually are testifying about the drugs the defendant is being accused of, not just some drugs pulled out of a police file cabinet. "Chain of custody" is something every trial lawyer learns about and DAs deal with every day, but Harris' DA's office not only were mucking it up, but when they knew they were not sure of the chain of custody, they were required by law, Maryland v. Brady, a US Supreme Court case, to disclose any mishaps to defense counsel immediately, which Harris failed to do.

There were incidents of the DA's office using experts and technicians who had been found by prior courts of being unreliable, one even had been called a "perpetrator of fraud" in her prior job, facts which the Brady case requires DAs to disclose to defense counsel, but which Harris failed to disclose.

If a Republican DA had been guilty of such malfeasance and wholesale violations of constitutional rights, Democrats would have tried to burn him/her alive, but Democrats have preferred to look the other way. Harris’ violations were substantial, important, and they reveal a pattern of low-integrity behavior which does not warrant giving her more power in a more powerful political office.

But you know, ” lesser of two evils” political system.

She has a right to try. It is the Democratic party. We have black women and minorities who have their say. There will be lots of candidates, but none better than Warren. She is pro-consumer. that is why the corporate party of the Repubs has attacked her non stop since she got into politics attacking her in such childish and emotional ways. Pocahanas. What the fuck is wrong with rightys?

I am not sure Harris can win. A black woman is this racist and misogynous country? No way. Just read this board to find out how much hate still exists.

Sorry, the but-they're-more-corporatist-than-our-party won't work.

And of course you're deeply concerned about that.
