A truck driver has been arrested and Homeland Security authorities are investigating after 14 people in the country without legal permission were found hiding in a box truck at a South Texas Border Patrol checkpoint.

Officials say the 13 males and one female were inside moving boxes marked "fragile."

An initial X-ray of the truck at an inspection checkpoint on Interstate 35 at Laredo detected irregularities that led to a closer examination of the cargo Friday. A dog accompanying agents also alerted officials.

Authorities say all 14 people being smuggled into the U.S. were from Mexico.

A Jordanian national residing in Monterrey, Mexico was arrested Saturday on arrival at JFK International Airport to face a criminal complaint issued in the Western District of Texas for his role in a scheme to smuggle special interest aliens from Mexico into the United States.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney John F. Bash of the Western District of Texas and Special Agent in Charge Shane M. Folden of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Antonio made the announcement.

On May 29, an arrest warrant was issued pursuant to a criminal complaint, which alleges that in the later half of 2017, Moayad Heider Mohammad Aldairi, 31, conspired with others to smuggle six Yemeni nationals across the Texas border and into the United States in exchange for a fee.

Six months after he was sentenced to 35 years in prison for sexually assaulting two Portland women on the same night in July 2017, Sergio Jose Martinez was sentenced Monday to an additional 92 months in federal prison for illegal reentry.

Martinez, 31, had been deported or removed from the U.S. numerous times, most recently in November 2016. After his most recent reentry into the country, he sexually assaulted two separate women.

On July 24, 2017, Martinez sexually assaulted a 65-year-old woman and stole her car. He was arrested after assaulting a second woman and running from police. Martinez was caught after officers chased him through a neighborhood.

According to court documents filed in March 2017, Martinez has a history of illegal entry into the United States. Those court documents said Martinez, who had been a transient in the Portland area for more than a year, was deported 20 times. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon reported Monday that he had been deported 11 times.

Martinez has at least five probation violations for re-entering the United States. His most recent removal was in November 2016, according to the March court documents.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged an immigration detainer against Martinez, asking authorities to notify them before releasing Martinez to allow ICE to take him into custody. The Department of Homeland Security said a detainer was requested for Martinez in December 2016, but he was released into the community and authorities did not notify ICE.

Seven suspects who were arrested in connection with an attempted robbery at a jewelry store in Texas over the weekend have been identified as Mexican nationals that were in the U.S. illegally.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has not determined when the suspects arrived and how long they’ve been here, Fox News has learned, but that is something that they’ll work to determine moving forward.

Once the suspects complete their sentences, they will be turned over to CBP so they can process their immigration and criminal histories accordingly.

The men were arraigned in court on Monday afternoon after they allegedly tried to rob the store at the La Plaza Mall in McAllen on Saturday. Mallgoers initially misconstrued their breaking the glass cases as gunfire, sparking a panic throughout the building.

Zepeda Abner Posos, 24; Alberto Rafael Barrera, 32; Brayan Oliver Melchor, 23; and Javier Leobardo Olvera-Ramirez, 22, were each charged with aggravated robbery and received a $200,000 bond, according to KRGV.

Jorge Angel Rodriguez Mejia, 28; Miguel Quintanilla-Cardenas, 26; and Raul Alberto Rangel-Rivera, 43, were also charged.

The men, five of whom reportedly gave police fake names, each face an extra charge with another $10,000 bond.
