Now that the guy has been found "dead in a shed" (literally) after committing suicide, a more accurate portrait of who he was is coming to light.

Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national, the shooter in the deadly Brown University shooting on Dec. 13 was a former Brown student....

Neves Valente was enrolled in a doctoral program at Brown but subsequently withdrew from the university.

As investigators work to learn more about Claudio Neves Valente and understand what prompted his violent rampage, former classmates and colleagues in Portugal are describing him as a talented but egotistical failed academic who could have been motivated by professional jealousy.

Among his former classmates, the most common theory is that Neves Valente saw Loureiro (murdered MIT professor) as a symbol of the academic and professional success that he was unable to achieve.

Filipe Moura, who taught Neves Valente as an undergraduate, said that Neves Valente had a "confrontational personality" and acted like knew everything in class.

Neves Valente was "obviously one of the best" students in that class, but "had a great need to stand out and show that he was better than the rest," Moura wrote in Portuguese.

He recalled that Neves Valente had an "unpleasant" attitude and was hostile to classmates who he didn't think were as "brilliant" as him. When Neves Valente began his Ph.D. At Brown, "he maintained the same attitude" and got into unnecessary conflicts with classmates, Moura wrote.
