    Default Learning Linux

    ^^

Im on the line. I have decided that I want to learn to do it. I need to learn how to navigate more than the pseudo-backdoors of a windows machine.

But, Im understandably unsure. I have talked a little about it, and it seems like Id do best if I force myself to learn it.

Does anyone here have advice or experiences or a willingness to talk about how to best wean myself from the tit of microsoft?

Try several of the different versions of Linux until you find one you like....

    Start here...http://distrowatch.com/

My favorite for people that want to switch from Windows to Linux is Zorin OS (http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=zorin), its easy to use and has the look & feel of Windows. Another one is Linux Mint (http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=mint), rock solid. Both have lots of user help forums to get you going.

Most important difference from Windows is learning the command line. If you don't use the command line, then yeah, it's a basic GUI OS except with a lot of free open source software. It'll also be considerably buggier than Windows.

I want to essentially learn the command line. The gui is secondary.

Ive been reading around about dual-installing the thing, but thats a whole mess of mess. People tell me to just us a virtual mount.

I did that to run Sim Tower , so maybe?

That is bullshit, it is only buggy if you have all the repositories enabled including pre-released and unsupported updates. I am in the Insider Preview program for Windows 10 and that pretty buggy as well! That's the price you pay for bleeding edge software. Bloody hell, do you think that the NSA, NASA, NYSE and even Microsoft would use Linux if it were buggy?

I agree with Racer X, you won't see me saying that very often, that Zorin OS is about the easiest to install and use. If you can't be bothered to burn a DVD then you can buy one easily enough! I have several different on PC including Zorin 9, in fact I am using it at this very moment!

Dual booting is very easy but you do have to take some basic precautions. I have two disks, with Windows 10 on one and all my Linux distros on the other. You don't have to do that but it just makes life easier for me at least. If you need any advice then just ask.

Burn a DVD....have not done that in a long time. I create all my installation software on USB....with one of the programs below.
