The head clerk for the Suber Mill voting precinct in Greer, Esther Roe, said she arrived to open the local poll at 7:01 a.m. when it should’ve been open at 7, sharp. There was a line of voters waiting on her from the door of the small lounge at Praise Cathedral down the sidewalk to the parking lot.
That seemed to be indicative of the local interest in the South Carolina Republican Primary Saturday morning.
Roe said voter turnout in the early going Saturday has been at least five times what it’s been in comparable elections during her 10 years at the local poll.
“I had 50 within the first half-hour,” she said. “Five or six, maybe 10, would be typical. They said that there was going to be a low turnout when we were trained. This is not a low turnout, not this early.”
Of the Greer residents willing to speak after casting their votes early Saturday, eight said they voted for Trump and two declined to reveal their choices.
For Scott Campbell, a married father of four who typically votes Republican, the choice was easy: Trump.
“I’m tired of politicians. I’d rather have somebody that can actually run a business in that office,” Campbell said. “We’re not voting for a deacon, and we’re not voting for a county councilman. We’re voting for someone that’s going to run our country, and we need someone in there that’s business-savvy, that can communicate with foreign leaders and not be afraid to walk away from the table if he has to, that sort of thing.”
That’s similar to the way 80-year-old Vernon Walker feels.
“I think he’ll get the world going again,” Walker said. “What we’ve got up there now is not very good. A lot of people know that. Trump is going to take care of us, I think. I think he’s going to bring some jobs back for some people.”
Tammy Gage, who like Walker always votes for Republicans, knew as soon as he announced his candidacy that she would vote for Trump.
“I know people are saying he’s not pro-life, but those tapes I believe are from a long time ago. People progress and get more information,” Gage said. “I do think he’s pro-life, and I do think he’s pro-Christian. He’s just not real grounded. But this is my opinion: sometimes God can use people that are new and fresh. And financially, yes he’s been bankrupt, but then he knows how to get out of it. This country, if we don’t get out of this debt, we’re in big trouble.”
Her choice, too, was Trump.
Said Carol Flink, “I don’t agree with all of his policies, but he’s for the veterans,” Flink said. “My husband is a veteran."

Put blame where it belongs
ATF decided it could not regulate bump stocks during the Obama administration.
It that time," the NRA wrote in a statement. "The NRA believes that devices designed to allow semiautomatic rifles to function like fully-automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations."
The ATF and Obama admin. ignored the NRA recommendations.
