    Default Bravely Drawing Mohammed...

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe...rsy/index.html

    By Paula Newton
    CNN

HOGANAS, Sweden (CNN) -- Swedish artist Lars Vilks says all he's doing is taking a stand in the name of artistic expression. But because of that stand, on this afternoon he's lying low -- on the ground, in fact -- looking for bombs under his car.

Al Qaeda has put a $100,000 price on his head and offered an extra $50,000 for anyone who murders him by slitting his throat after the eccentric artist and sculptor drew a cartoon depicting the Prophet Mohammed as a dog.

"I don't think it should not be a problem to insult a religion, because it should be possible to insult all religions in a democratic way, " says Vilks from his home in rural Sweden.

"If you insult one, then you should insult the other ones."

His crude, sketched caricature shows the head of Prophet Mohammed on the body of a dog. Dogs are considered unclean by conservative Muslims, and any depiction of the prophet is strictly forbidden.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

Believe nothing on the faith of traditions, even though they have been held in honor for many generations and in diverse places. Do not believe a thing because many people speak of it. Do not believe on the faith of the sages of the past. Do not believe what you yourself have imagined, persuading yourself that a God inspires you. Believe nothing on the sole authority of your masters and priests. After examination, believe what you yourself have tested and found to be reasonable, and conform your conduct thereto.

I can't believe that it should take any bravery at all to do this. But clearly it does.

Bush doubled the debt from 5 trillion to 10 trillion.
    Proving tax cuts work!

Bush asked for and signed for the TARP money.
The Republican senate leader backed Bush on this.

Its nothing to do with political correctness. Would you describe AQ as stalwarts of the politically correct?

Of course not! That was laughable and moronic.

This is where authoritarianism of any kind, including religious, will bring you.

    Sorry .. I don't see "bravery" here.

Rushing into a burning building and saving the life of another human being is bravery.

Ignoring a line of fire and saving the life of a fallen comrade is bravery.

Painting something that you know is going to be offensive to a lot of people .. hoping that you do indeed offend a lot of people .. is a long ass way from being brave or intelligent.

Even knowing that you have a price on your head? Really?

I can see nothing inherently wrong with making a picture. Just as I see nothing inherenetly wrong with making "Piss Christ", or the Madonna out of Elephant poop or whatever they used...

The bravery would come in at the place where you are doing it knowing you may be slaughtered for it.

That would be called stupidity, not bravery.

Drawing a picture of Mohammed's head on a dog .. bravery????

    That would be called ridiculous.

Not only is that far removed from bravery, it's also far removed from art.

This unknown was simply looking for his 15 minutes of fame.

Right, nobody should fight for the right to free speech when it may insult somebody....

I find your authoritarian views on this disconcerting.

So was "Piss Christ" art as in my post from above? It wasn't brave to create that one, but it evoked controversy as the artist originally intended. Did this invoke controversy? Is art that brings controversy art?

Regardless of the whole "art" argument, the guy did this as a protest against those who threaten to kill others for creating an image. It is much like the "Piss Christ" created to point out the right to free speech.
