We had six hundred kids at our school, no girls of course. No coloured people either. It wasn't because the school was racist but there weren't any black people in the entire city. If you saw a black man the old women would say 'Oh look. A black man. Spit for luck.' (not at him, I hasten to add).
The first time I was conscious of black people was when I went to work in London. We had a black girl and what they used to call a 'cape coloured' girl and a white South African. The obvious hatred of one for the others was palpable. Like wild animals. They could each recognise their adversaries and showed an immediate hatred. I, honestly, could not understand it. The main problem seemed to lie with the cape coloured girl. I guess because she didnt fit into either camp.
