Car drives into crowd; DeSoto boy on life support

DeSOTO — A 12-year-old DeSoto boy is on life support after being run over by a car.

Donte Johnson — or "DJ," as he's known — was standing outside his home at the Brookhollow apartments when a group of teenagers started fighting nearby.

Cellphone video shows the teens violently attacking one another in the street.

DeSoto police say 17-year-old Dominique Hemphill was one of them. On the video, he is seen getting into his car and driving into the crowd that had gathered.

He clips one teenager, but witnesses say he then ran over Donte Johnson, who was standing in the parking lot.

"It's sad when a little innocent kid gets hit for stuff that other people did," said witness Jaqualon Clayton." "He was innocent; he was just trying to get out of the way."

DJ's head injuries have left him in a coma, but his grandmother, Billie Washington, is holding out hope he'll recover.

"It's hard, it's really hard, but I'm still praying," she said.

DJ's family has been by his side at Children's Medical Center Dallas. The 12-year-old is a student at DeSoto West Middle School.

"He's innocent, a good boy, loves school, loves his friends... is friends with everybody," said his grandfather, Claude Washington.

DeSoto police arrested Dominique Hemphill and charged him with injury to a child. They are also considering charges against some of the other teenagers seen fighting in the video.

Detectives are looking for other witnesses who may have videotaped the incident.

Car crash into St. Charles home causes gas leak, evacuations

Two people were seriously injured Sunday morning when the SUV they were in slammed into a home owned by Lindenwood University at 448 N. Kingshighway in St. Charles.

The SUV had come to rest on the home's gas meter and severed the line attached to it. The two Lindenwood students living in the house and one other person visiting scrambled for safety because of the profuse gas leak and possibility of explosion.

St. Charles Fire Capt. Dan Casey said fire and paramedic units were notified of the crash at 8:35 a.m. A one-block area around the crash site was blocked off and Casey said 17 people were evacuated from their homes.

Casey said Monday that everyone was allowed back in their homes about two hours after the crash.

"They're (the SUV's occupants) very lucky they didn't ignite the gas from the meter," Casey said. "The line that was cut was coming up from the ground to the meter and the house was fully charged with gas."

The SUV had careened off a telephone pole before hitting the house, moving it 6 inches off its foundation.

Casey said the SUV's two occupants were taken to SSM St. Joseph Health Center in St. Charles with non-life-threatening injuries. Casey said one had chest and head injuries and the other had multiple fractures.

The cause of the crash was unknown as of Monday.

A St. Charles police officer also was taken to the same hospital after saying she felt light-headed from the gas fumes. St. Charles police Sgt. Todd Wilson said the officer felt better once she got fresh air, and was treated and released Sunday.

"Laclede (Gas) came out and pinched the leaking line off and that allowed our crews to self-ventilate the house," Casey said.

Several Lindenwood officials were on site Sunday morning to assist the students who were living in the house. David Anderson and Jeremy Edgerson, who had just graduated from Lindenwood on Saturday, were scheduled to move out Sunday, university spokesman Scott Queen said.

Anderson and Edgerson were both sleeping when the crash happened. Anderson said he was downstairs on the couch and Edgerson was in an upstairs bedroom.

"As soon as I heard (the crash) I jumped up and debris flew by my head and I dove toward the couch for cover," Anderson said. "It took me a few seconds to figure out what happened, but I heard gas leaking. It was a loud hiss."

Anderson said he ran upstairs to make sure Edgerson was awake. Anderson said it took about two minutes from the time of the crash until he and Edgerson were out of the house.

The roommates stood in a light mist and watched emergency responders work at the crash site just outside the evacuation zone Sunday morning. Edgerson said he's been trained as a first responder but is not yet certified.

"I wish I could go down and help," he said.

Drew Ebert, who lives in the 300 block of North Kingshighway, said he heard the sirens and came outside to investigate. Ebert, who teaches and coaches at nearby St. Charles High, lives across the street from where the evacuation zone was set up.

"I always hear fire trucks around here, so I usually don't think a lot about them," Ebert said. "This (Sunday) morning was a different story."
