Default 1st Grader Faces Reform School for Camping Tool

    Zero tolerance policies are stupid.

A Delaware first-grader who wanted to eat lunch at school with his favorite camping utensil, a combination of folding fork, knife and spoon, now faces 45 days in reform school.

Hundreds of people were expected to attend a school board meeting Tuesday evening to object to the suspension of 6-year-old Zachary Christie from Downes Elementary School for bringing the camping utensil from home.

The folding knife is banned as a dangerous instrument under the Christina School District's zero-tolerance policy in the student code of conduct and officials said they have to act regardless of his age or what he planend to do with the instrument.
The priests of the different religious sects, who dread the advance of science as witches do the approach of day-light; and scowl on it the fatal harbinger announcing the subversion of the duperies on which they live. - Thomas Jefferson

It is quite over the top punishment if you ask me...but there should be no knives at school either.

I am just happy they were able to put that evil bastard away before he was able to carve up his lunch.

Common sense left public schools long ago. The unions and teachers have destroyed what little credibility they once had.

I read about this. Poor little kid; he thought he had a cool tableware tool. This has been blown all out of proportion. I agree with the above sentiments that some reason and common sense have to enter into situations like this. Hardline adherence to the "letter of the law" is no more than brainless bureaucratic nonsense.

Schools that do this deserve to have every student removed. They cannot possibly expect me to trust them to teach my children even simple things when they can't even remotely suggest they have any idea of a sense of justice.
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.
    - -- Aristotle

Believe nothing on the faith of traditions, even though they have been held in honor for many generations and in diverse places. Do not believe a thing because many people speak of it. Do not believe on the faith of the sages of the past. Do not believe what you yourself have imagined, persuading yourself that a God inspires you. Believe nothing on the sole authority of your masters and priests. After examination, believe what you yourself have tested and found to be reasonable, and conform your conduct thereto.

I was going to write something sarcastic, but this is so goddamn stupid I can't. When I was a kid we brought Buck Knives to school in their leather carriers. We used to play mumbly peg and chicken in the grass in the front of school. Now I am not advocating we go back to those crazy days but for fuck sakes this is a 6 year old kid and they are REALLY talking about reform school? That will do him good. This is the result of stupid knee jerk reactionary policies that have no political boundaries. If this is allowed to continue to its absurd conclusion people in Delaware should vote out every silly son of bitch that wrote a law so fucking idiotic that it would allow a 6 year old to go to reform school for eating his lunch with a camping utensil.

Delaware is a Democratic state and yes, I agree with you.

This situation is another unintended consequence of 20+ years of politicians promising to "get tough" on crime and make our schools safe.

We've taken away control of the classroom from the individual teachers and instead made up these ridiculous "zero tolerance" rules that inevitably ensnare someone like this little boy.

Want to blame someone then blame the politicians who pander to the scared and uninformed.

Nope. The full blame is on this idiotic faculty and their decisions in this matter.

They are idiotic! Remember the first playground kiss? Well, now, you don't do it because you will be suspended for sexual harassment!
It is ridiculous how far it has gone!
