[h=2]Americans bought record numbers of guns last month amid an apparent surge in popularity for weapons as Christmas presents.[/h]

According to the FBI, over 1.5 million background checks on customers were requested by gun dealers to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System in December. Nearly 500,000 of those were in the six days before Christmas.

It was the highest number ever in a single month, surpassing the previous record set in November.

On Dec 23 alone there were 102,222 background checks, making it the second busiest single day for buying guns in history.

The actual number of guns bought may have been even higher if individual customers took home more than one each.

Explanations for America's surge in gun buying include that it is a response to the stalled economy with people fearing crime waves. Another theory is that buyers are rushing to gun shops because they believe tighter firearms laws will be introduced in the future.

LOL...I bought my boy (8 years old) a gun for Christmas this year. Makes 2 years in a row. As to the why for the spike in gun sales, I think that the bolded portion above is more logical. In case I did it wrong, the part that says that some are worried about more stringent gun laws in the future. I do know people who think if Obama gets a second term he will legislate more from the left in every venue, including firearms laws. Some may be scared of that, I really don't know.

Merry christmas my son heres a gun so you can kill gods creatures for fun.

Who would jesus shoot?

Ahh, don't worry desh, I'm not completely nuts. He's becoming quite a duck hunter and likes to kill squirrels too. If he sharpens his accuracy up over the summer and into the fall I'll take him deer hunting. Fun times for me and my boy....just like with my dad and me. My dad who taught me, as I am teaching my son, "if you kill it you eat it."

I can think of a million other ways to bond with a child that doesnt include him learning how to kill.

Its likely because prices are pretty low. Importers have been competing to move the most units, often selling at or lower than cost.

Desh, stop being ignorant.

so you think the only way to bond with a child is to teach them to kill things?

Having taught 4 kids to shoot and 2 of them to hunt, I can safely say you are missing the point.

I did not bond with my children over the death of anything. I bonded by teaching them difficult skills and responsibility. I taught them the same lessons men (and women) have been teaching their children for millenia on end, for as long as we have existed. I taught them safety, respect, responsibility, ethics, and even survival skills.

and many children are raised every day without having to be taught that killing things is fun

So they are. Please show me where I posted that I taught my children that killing is fun?

I would also love to see where, in these terrible economic times, you would get the money to fund the state and federal conservation efforts without shooters and hunters?

Many children are raised without decent food, especially meat. But those children who WERE taught to shoot and hunt have donated tons of high quality protein to various food banks and relief agencies. In 2010 alone Safari International donated 477,392 lbs of meat. That was enough for 1.9 million meals for people who would likely have had nutritionally deficit diets without it. My children were part of that.

Many children are also raised having witnessed violent crimes against their mothers or fathers. My children would not.

If you want to make strawman arguments please do so in a topic on which you have some facts.
