The far Right doesn't care....unless it happens to them. They'll keep playing the "more people died of the flu" tune until the numbers exceed flu deaths then they'll change their song to some other deflection.
It wasn't that long ago when it was "37,000 flu deaths" but when the COVID-19 deaths started racking up, they changed it to "67,000" deaths, which is the high end of suspected flu deaths last year as noted below. Not the low end or even the middle, but the high end.
In short, don't expect honesty much less a scientific response. They'll spin whatever tale Trump wants them to tell.

CDC estimates that influenza was associated with more than 35.5 million illnesses, more than 16.5 million medical visits, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths during the 2018–2019 influenza season. This burden was similar to estimated burden during the 2012–2013 influenza season.

Deaths
COVID-19: Approximately 127,601 deaths reported worldwide; 26,059 deaths in the U.S., as of Apr. 15, 2020.*
Flu: 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year.
The COVID-19 situation is changing rapidly. Since this disease is caused by a new virus, people do not have immunity to it, and a vaccine may be many months away. Doctors and scientists are working on estimating the mortality rate of COVID-19, but at present, it is thought to be higher than that of most strains of the flu.
