Big Lawns: Bad For The Environment And Racist

This is some woke sh*t for a Friday. Twitter is the best. Check that privilege. Being a city person I've never actually had a lawn. Homes are the biggest purchase most people make in their lifetimes. They (usually) fight hard to keep up their property values vis a vis treatment of their lawns.

Front lawns are catastrophic environmentally yet are prized as a symbol of the white racist suburban dream. This is about a larger issue—who gets to determine how space is used? How are laws that control how space can be used a means of forcing white norms onto nonwhite ppl?

The way white ppl obsessively control suburban lawns is indicative of the white conception of property & the white psyche's compulsion to establish complete dominion over "property"—while using laws to punish non-white ppl who build gardens on or refuse to manicure their lawns.

If the people from India keep creeping their garden over onto my land without my permission I am certainly going to exercise some white privilege on them, so he may have a point.

A well maintained lawn is better for the environment than a "freedom lawn" is as far as carbon sequestration, controlling soil erosion, runoff and filtering contaminants. Now granted that means following best management practices and not just putting out fertilizers and pesticides like a crazy person, but turf combined with the right ornamentals, beat gardens and weed infested plots of land hands down.

I would say to the other half of the comment, I think HOA's are stupid and would never live under one, but I don't see it as white supremacist to want to keep your property value up. Getting the best return on your investment should be something that everyone wants.

In Louisiana you want a big lawn to maximize air circulation in the days before AC and to minimize mosquitoes. You also want a big lawn so you can spot snakes.

I'd sure like to see your sources about that lawn being better for the environment.

Lol, what, people of color don't have nice lawns?

Really, all the chemicals we use to have perfect lawns probably isn't good for the environment, but it sure creates a lot of jobs.

Living in the country, we just mow the grass and weeds and call it a day. Some weeds are actually quite beautiful.

That IS fucking nutzo... the racist part, that is. People who live in uber wealthy suburban areas are super conscious about how their property is perceived by their neighbors. The well-manicured and perfectly-landscaped property matters to them. But not enough to maintain it themselves. They typically hire landscaping companies, that typically hire (at least where we used to live) illegals to do the hard work. Our next door neighbor in STL was a perfect example. Her lawn mowers and landscaper ppl were Hipsanics who didn't speak much English. I'm not sure why that's racist though. It's more like being a hypocritical Trump supporter, like she was. Scream about illegals taking our jobs, hire them to do the work you're too fucking lazy to do yourself.

Meh he’s trolling (the author, not you.).

You know that does remind me off an oddity of the area I’m from. You can tell if a farmers of English descent by their beautiful home and ramshackle barn. Where as the farmer of German descent will have a beautiful barn and a ramshackle home.

It sounds plausible, those bright green lawns probably do sequester a lot of CO2. And if chems and fertilizers are applied sparingly and mostly absorbed by the grass, it may be a good thing. But how many people actually don't over apply lawn chemicals?

About 20 years ago I lived out in the country and my neighbors were Iranian immigrants with a small farming operation who had a bad habit of letting his livestock get loose. He learned about black privilege when my lab killed one of his rams that got lose and wondered on to my property.

Yes. And a "lawn" full of them is a microcosm of nature and beauty.

When I met Mr Owl I lived in a rural area; he lived in an extremely densely populated suburb of STL, I moved in with him. His lot was a sad and typical boring and lifeless tiny suburban plot of 7500 sq ft including the house footprint. There were two small trees and two mature oaks, struggling grass, and nothing else. I said I couldn't live without plants and life. He said make it better. We did. One of the things we did was build a rain garden to capture run-off and channel it into plants instead of the sewer. I'm proud to say that when the MSD folks came around to inspect properties to try to curb run-off and pollution... my efforts were featured on their website! They even brought other ppl around to take pics and ask questions.

When we sold the house we were a designated wildlife habitat, with native plants, habitat, a veggie garden, a tiny backyard pond.... and everyone who came to visit or work with us to sell the home said "Wow, this is a sanctuary." We had nine species of mammals, two amphibians, and 25 bird species in just that tiny space. Oh, and a thriving bee colony as well. (I gifted that to a local friend when we moved.)

If you want to surround yourself with life... you can do it.

My lawn is big. And it is dying. And I am happy about that. But it is big. And if I could afford the 3 acres next to me it would be bigger.

Quite possible although if you read their twitter feed they seem pretty serious.

I wouldn't care so much if they bothered to ask. I wouldn't care so much if they even acknowledged your existence when you give them a wave or a nod. I wouldn't mind so much if they kept their trash in their yard. Shame they are about to be looking at an ugly fence come this fall as their creeping trash skewing days are numbered.
